The NHL regular season has been shortened to 56 games by the coronavirus pandemic, but that hasn't stopped the league from scheduling an in-season spectacle.

The Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers will be taking part in outdoor games as part of the NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe, Feb. 20-21.

"We are delighted to announce the NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe and can't wait to get on site for what undoubtedly will be two thrilling games in a breathtaking setting," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said. "Ever since we began staging outdoor games in 2003 and made it a regular feature of our annual schedule in 2008, we have considered myriad non-stadium settings, but they always were rendered impractical because of the sheer volume of demand from our fans to attend.

"This season, unable to host our usual huge crowds at such events, we will continue our tradition of taking the game and our players back to their outdoor roots."

The games will be played on a rink situated on the lakefront 18th fairway of the golf course at Edgewood Tahoe Resort in Stateline, Nev.

The Avalanche and Golden Knights will meet Feb. 20; the Bruins and Flyers will play Feb. 21. Vegas has never played in a NHL outdoor game, but Colorado has played in two, the Bruins have played in three and the Flyers have competed in four before this season.

The Lake Tahoe games will bring the NHL's total of outdoor games to 32 since 2003.

The 2021 Winter Classic that was scheduled for Jan. 1 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minn., was canceled because of the pandemic and the delayed start to the NHL season, which begins Wednesday.
